A brilliant book which provides an insight into not only the specific slice of history which it talks about – namely the lead up to the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan and then the Taliban’s bloody coup – but also a more general look at human nature and the intricacies of relationships between people: loyalty, guilt and ultimately redemption:
“Sometimes, I think everything he did, feeding the poor on the streets, building the orphanage, giving money to friends in need, it was all his way of redeeming himself. And that, I believe, is what true redemption is, Amir jan, when guilt leads to good.” Rahim Khan
